I (mistakenly) decided to stop by Tokyo Sky Tree on Friday to check out the Parappa the Rapper 20th Anniversary cafe. Although still in the middle of Golden Week, I went hoping that, being a weekday, it might be slightly less crazy than maybe over the weekend. I was wrong. It was maybe even more horrible than when I braved Sky Tree on a Sunday a few days earlier. Thankfully, the cafe itself was relatively not busy and I was able to get a seat after only waiting for a few minutes, so all hope was not lost.

There is a general anime and character goods store located on the fourth floor of the Tokyo Sky Tree shopping mall (you don’t have to pay to get in) and the cafe is located just outside of this store. It’s pretty difficult to miss.

The menu for the cafe seems fairly big at first glance. There are three savory foods: the Parappa sandwich set, Sunnie burger, and Chop Chop curry onigiri and onion soup set. There are also three different parfaits and a donut plate. Everything else is drinks!

For every food or drink item you buy, you get a chance to reach into the box and pull out a little colored ball. There are four different colors you can get, and each color represents a different sticker. I ended up with two “Good” stickers and a “Bad”, but there is also “Awful” and “Great”.

I ordered the sandwich set for food. The sandwich comes decorated with Parappa’s face and covered with his little hat.

My friend ordered one of the ice cream tea drinks. The iced teas come with a random iced cookie, with possibilities being Chop Chop, Instructor Mooselini, Prince Fleaswallow, MC King Kong Mushi, and Cheap Cheap.

I got the Katy Blue Cream Soda.

The food itself was pretty standard for a themed cafe in Japan, but enjoyable! I have plans to go back and try the Sunnie burger and more drinks.

Along with the cafe, there is a small gift shop as well, selling Parappa and 20th Anniversary merchandise.

There is a variety of stuff, ranging from plush to clearfiles to snacks.

There is even a cute gacha off to the side.

Hello everyone!

I’m back with a brand new type of post: Adventures in Japan! These posts will cover interesting things I’ve done in Japan, sometimes Pokemon related but not necessarily.

Today’s adventure: Magikarp Taiyaki!

I talked about the Magikarp Taiyaki originally in this post, but to recap: Kuriko-An, a chain of taiyaki centered food stalls, started selling Magikarp shaped taiyaki at five of their locations in the Tokyo and Yokohama area. The five locations are Yokohama (West Gate Shop), Minato-Mirai, Akihabara, Asakusa-Nakamise-Doori, and Kichijouji. I originally said Magikarp was only available with red bean filling, but actually, he also comes in chocolate and custard.

One Magikarp taiyaki costs 210 yen, including tax.

I was under the impression these Magikarp taiyakis were limited, so I was really happy to hear they’re still on sale, and the first thing I did when I had a chance to visit Akihabara during the day was to get one! The store was very easy to find and is about a minute away from the JR Akihabara station Electric Town exit.

The wrapper for the taiyaki has a Pokeball on one side and lyrics from the Magikarp song on the back.

My favorite taiyaki flavor is custard, so since the option was available, I chose custard for my Magikarp. Honestly, it tasted very taiyaki-y, which isn’t bad! But don’t go in expecting something amazing. The batter for the taiyaki pastry is not very sweet, but it is fluffy and soft, so that’s a plus, and the custard was yummy if a little messy (but that’s why they give you the paper wrapping).

All in all, I’d give it a 10/10 because it’s Magikarp shaped and was cute! If you’re in the Akihabara area (or one of the locations I mentioned above) and can buy a Magikarp treats, I highly recommend at least getting one for the experience.
